Types of Conveyor Systems
Mechanical conveying, one of several types of conveyor systems, offers material handling solutions for a variety of industries and applications, including bulk powder handling. The type of conveyor system used depends on the specific needs of a particular company and each offers unique benefits and options. Here’s the low down on some different types of conveyor systems.
1. Screw conveyors – While technically part of the “conveyor belt family,” this conveying system is different in its principle of operation; the direction of a screw conveyor distinguishes it from your standard belt conveyor. Materials can be transported either on an incline over short distances or horizontally covering long distances.
As the word “screw” suggests, this type of conveyor system operates through a rotation inside a tube. Screw conveyors are used for the transfer of powder, for example, by using either shafted or shaft-less helixes rotating inside of a trough (or tube). This puts force against the product as it is being rotated so the material can be moved and controlled by varying the rotational speed.
This flexibility and versatility provides exceptional control over bulk material handling.
2. Vibrating conveyors – As with screw conveyors, the means and direction of conveyance distinguishes a vibrating conveyor and the industrial application for which it is used. Materials, such as powder, are conveyed horizontally at a controlled rate in a sealed environment. The conveying action is gentle; no moving parts come in contact with the material resulting in virtually no degradation making it ideal for fragile powders.
A vibrating tube conveyor, with its removable end covers, allows for easy and frequent cleaning providing low maintenance operation for plants utilizing sanitary applications.
3. Differential Motion conveyor – This type of conveyor system is known for its gentle conveying motion which essentially eliminates potential damage caused by the conveyor system. Also known as a horizontal motion conveyor, this system leverages a horizontal, slow advance/quick return system. This type of conveying system is ideal for the transport of fine materials, such as powders, and ensures even blending during transport. In addition, the differential motion conveyor is known to be relatively simple mechanically, and therefore requires fewer maintenance concerns.
